Premier's VCE Awards

Criteria for the Premier's Awards

Nominations for the 2008 Top All-Round VCE High Achievers category were based on study scores from 2008 and 2007. Nominations for 2008 study awards and the best three international students were based on 2008 study scores. Each year individual Graded Assessment scores are used to determine the top group of students for each VCE study award. For study awards, where individual Graded Assessment scores are not able to distinguish the top group of students, the Chief Assessor of the Examination can be requested to recommend the best students based on the quality of their exam script. Awards are not made for VCE studies with an enrolment of less than 100 students.

Top All-Round VCE High Achievers

The Top All-round VCE high achievers are students who have achieved study scores of 46 or higher in at least five VCE studies in the current year and the year immediately prior. For 2008, there were 18 students identified as Top All-round VCE high achievers. Scored VET studies are included in the count of studies.

Best Three International Students

The order of merit for a special category of international students studying in Victoria on a student visa is based on their 2008 Premier’s VCE Awards score. The Premier’s VCE Awards score is calculated by the addition of the 2008 Study scores obtained for the best four VCE studies plus ten percent of study scores obtained in up to a maximum of two other VCE studies. University subjects and VET studies may contribute to the score.

Best Ten Students in English

Students with an English Study score of 50 are identified. Individual English Graded Assessment scores are used to determine the order of merit and identify the best ten students.

Best Ten Students in Mathematics

Students with results in both Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods are identified. An order of merit list based on the aggregate of the study scores for both Mathematics studies is determined. Individual Mathematics graded assessment scores are used to discriminate the top group of students and to identify the best ten students. Students must have satisfactorily completed both Mathematics studies in the same calendar year OR satisfactorily completed a university extension study Maths in the current year, if the two VCE Mathematics studies were not undertaken in the same calendar year. Where students have not undertaken both Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics in the same calendar year, the two Maths studies must be completed over two consecutive years.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE)

Up to a maximum of ten awards may be given for the LOTE studies. Only one student is chosen from any one LOTE study. Students with a study score of 50 and three A+ grades are identified. Where there is more than one student with a study score of 50 and three A+ grades in any given LOTE study, individual LOTE Graded Assessment scores are used to identify the top student. In the event that there are less than 10 studies where a student has a score of 50 and three A+, students with study scores less than 50 can be included in the best ten.

Best Five Students in Other VCE Studies

Students with a study score of 50 are identified. Individual Graded Assessment scores are used to determine the order of merit and to identify the best five students. In some VCE studies, it is necessary to include study scores less than 50 to determine the best five. For History the best five students are chosen from the three History studies, for Information Technology the best five students are chosen from the two Information Technology studies and for Music Performance the best five students are chosen from Music Performance (Group) and Music Performance (Solo) studies. The VCAA reserves the right to recommend less than five students in the individual study categories.

There is no need for students to apply to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to be eligible for the awards. To be eligible students must sign the disclosure authorisation for awards on the VCE Student Personal Details form, which is provided by their school. Award winners are notified in April/May.
