Special Provision for Students Affected by Bushfires 2009

A streamlined process for Special Examination Arrangements and Derived Examination Scores is being developed for situations where schools believe student performance in the forthcoming October/November examinations will be/has been adversely affected by the recent Victorian bushfires.

Special Examination Arrangements for Students Affected by Bushfires

In October/November 2009, students would be eligible for Special Examination Arrangements where the effects of the bushfires earlier this year have an ongoing impact on a student’s ability to prepare for their examinations. Students experiencing this ongoing impact would be likely to be involved in counselling with school based welfare staff, or with counsellors brought into the school from external organizations, or with private counsellors outside the school. It would also be expected that these students would have been approved internal Special Provision for School Assessed Coursework/Tasks in line with the school’s policies and procedures.

For more information, instructions and the application form, see Special Examination Arrangements application form (DOC - 92KB).

Derived Examination Scores (DES) for Students Affected by Bushfires

Schools are able to apply for a Group DES application for students who remain severely affected by the 2009 Victorian bushfires. The closing date will be 7 days after each examination.

For more information see Derived Examination Score for students severely affected by bushfires – Information for Principals (DOC - 47KB).

Compassionate Late Withdrawal and Interrupted Studies

Schools are reminded that completing a VCE study or even the entire school year might not be the best option in cases where students have been severely affected by the bushfires. In such cases, consideration should be given to Interrupted Studies or Compassionate Late Withdrawal (Sections 5.7.4 and 5.8.1 of the VCE and VCAL Administrative Handbook 2009). Please contact Student Records and Results Unit on 9651 4346 or 9651 4411 to discuss further.
