We need assessors
Applications for Assessors and Leading Assessors for the 2022 General Achievement Test (GAT) are now open.
You must have:
- relevant tertiary qualifications including teachers/trainers with Certificate IV Training and Assessment
- previous and current teaching, lecturing or industry experience
- knowledge of senior secondary school studies or equivalent, which may include VCE, VET and VCAL
- previous experience in assessing VCE, VET and VCAL
You must be available to:
- attend a training session (dates to be advised)
- complete marking during the period
- Leading Assessors – Friday 9 September to Wednesday 5 October

Assessors – Saturday 10 September to Wednesday 5 October
All assessors must abide by the VCAA Conditions of Appointment, including:
- declaring any conflict of interest, in particular any close relationships and associations with students and schools
- upholding the
DET core values (see under 'Other Resources')
- obtaining a current and satisfactory Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)
- providing evidence of being fully (double) vaccinated or having a medical exception, as defined in the Victorian Government's
COVID-19 vaccination policy
Assessors are required to:
- attend a compulsory training meeting. This will be held on a weekend or weekday
- mark an allocated number of student responses
- adhere to marking procedures, policies and timelines as determined by the VCAA
There are three types of Leading Assessor roles:
- Chief Assessor
- Assistant Chief Assessor
- Executive Panel Member
Leading Assessors must have a comprehensive understanding of and experience in VCE, VET and VCAL curriculum, training and assessment and/or the Australian Core Skills Framework.
Leading Assessors are required to:
- conduct professional meetings and gain agreement on assessment guidelines
- implement VCAA policies and procedures in relation to supporting VCE, VET and VCAL assessment
- monitor and analyse assessor performance
- provide timely and constructive feedback to assessors and to the VCAA
- ensure adherence to VCAA assessment policies and procedures
- manage project risks and issues as they arise
- manage the work of teams and adhere to assessment timeframes
- liaise with the relevant personnel from the VCAA
The GAT will be held on Wednesday 7 September.
The GAT consists of two sections:
- Section A will assess literacy and numeracy skills. The test will have one writing task with two parts and 50 numeracy and 50 reading multiple-choice questions.
- Section B will assess skills in mathematics, science, technology, the arts, and humanities, with an increased focus on critical and creative thinking skills. The test will have one extended writing task and 25 mathematics, science, and technology and 25 arts and humanities multiple-choice questions
All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence will be required to sit Sections A and B. Senior VCAL students will sit Section A only.
You can choose to apply as an assessor for Section A or Section B or both sections.
