Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0

Overview and benefits

On 20 June 2024, the Minister for Education, the Hon. Ben Carrol launched the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 on the new Victorian Curriculum website. The Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Humanities, Phase 1 Languages (Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese), Mathematics, Science, Technologies, the capabilities, foundational skills and cross-curriculum priorities are now available for familiarisation.

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 gives Victoria's students the best opportunity to thrive in a world of increasing change and rapid technological advancement. It reflects the expertise and feedback of Victorian teachers, making it easier for them to plan, assess and report on student learning.

The overarching structure of the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 has not changed from Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 1.0. T he learning areas, capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities remain the same. This recognises the continuing importance of a discipline-based approach to learning, where learning areas are regarded as both enduring and dynamic, supported by clearly articulated capabilities and cross-curriculum perspectives.

English as an Additional Language, Levels A to D (Towards Foundation) and additional Languages curriculums are currently being reviewed and will be released later. See the familiarisation timeline below for more information. Continue to use the curriculum materials published on the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 1.0 website for these curriculum areas until further advised.

Familiarisation and implementation

For each curriculum area, the roll out will include 2 stages: familiarisation and implementation.

During familiarisation
  • We will carefully guide teachers and school leaders through the revisions so they understand the changes. This will include providing a comprehensive suite of resources and professional learning opportunities
  • Teachers will become familiar with the revised curriculum and update their teaching and learning programs and lesson plans
During implementation
  • Teachers will implement the revised curriculum in classrooms based on their updated teaching and learning programs and lesson plans
  • We will continue to provide information resources and professional learning to help teachers implement the revised curriculum according to sector timelines
  • The Department of Education and the Victorian Catholic Education Authority will determine the detailed timings for implementing the curriculum in their sectors, respectively. Independent schools will be responsible for their implementation timelines

Timeline (as of Term 3 2024)

The original timeline published in Term 2 2023 has been updated.

The updated timeline prioritises Mathematics and English so that schools and teachers can focus on the knowledge and skills that underpin numeracy and literacy. It also gives school leaders and teachers more time to become familiar with the other curriculum areas in 2024 and 2025.

Following extensive consultation with specialist school leaders and teachers from across all sectors and with key stakeholders, the VCAA has adjusted the timeline for releasing the Levels A to D (Towards Foundation) curriculum to allow for a comprehensive review period. This will ensure the curriculum and its supporting resources reflect contemporary research and meets the needs of students and teachers now and in the future.

The revised curriculum for Levels A to D (Towards Foundation) will be released over 2025-2026. (see updated timeline below)

Languages

The revised Languages curriculums will be published in phases. Implementation will be determined by the sectors.

Phase 1 – Chinese (Second Language Learner), French, Italian, Japanese

  • Familiarisation begins in June 2024

Phase 2 – German, Indonesian, Korean, Modern Greek, Spanish

  • Familiarisation begins in November 2024

Phase 3 – Arabic, Classical Greek, Framework for Classical Languages, Hindi, Latin, Non-Roman Alphabet languages, Roman Alphabet Languages, Turkish, Vietnamese

Phase 4 – Auslan (First Language Learner and Second Language Learner pathways), Chinese (Background Language Learner and First Language Learner pathways), Victorian Aboriginal Languages

Placing teachers at the forefront

The VCAA recognises the expertise of practising teachers and the importance of consultation with educators in developing the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0.

That’s why the revised curriculum is based on comprehensive feedback from teachers, including through formal curriculum monitoring conducted over the past 5 years, the review of the Australian Curriculum and our Curriculum Area Reference Panels. More than 300 primary and secondary teachers and school leaders across Victoria have made contributions.

Reporting

All Victorian government and Catholic schools are required by their respective sectors to provide written reports on student achievement against the Victorian Curriculum F–10 achievement standards for every student at least twice per year. To support teachers and their reporting requirements, the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 will include revisions to the achievement standards to provide clear progressions of learning and help school leaders and teachers assess and report on student learning more effectively.

If you work in a government school, refer to the Department of Education’s advice at Reporting student achievement and progress Foundation to 10. If you work in a Catholic school, refer to the Victorian Catholic Education Authority or the Catholic Education Victoria Network (CEVN) portal.
