This ‘Stacked Venn” diagram shows the overlapping relationships between the essential elements of the Study through four circles nested within each other. The outer circle is labelled ‘Achievement of the outcomes’ (for each unit) and within this circle is a smaller circle labelled “Key Knowledge”, which includes the selection of case studies and examples. Within the second circle is a third smaller circle, representing the ‘Key Skills’ which are based on the ‘Characteristics of the study’. Finally, within the third circle is a fourth, labelled “Asssessment”. All the circles rest on a common baseline. The diagram signifies the integrated nature of the 4 elements of the study in order to emphasise the holistic relationship between them.
Opportunities for Scaffolding across Units 1 and 2
This is a tabular representation of the connections that could be made across the 4 areas of study which make up Units 1 and 2.
The table consists of three columns and 6 rows. The first column is headed ‘Delivery of Units 1 and 2 only’; the second is headed ‘Unit 1 Area of Study 1’ and the third is headed ‘Unit 1 Area of Study 2’. These headings are followed by two rows: row 1 represents the choice of political actors that can be focused on and row 2 represents the choice of issues that needs to be made within each area of study. Both of these choices relate to Unit 1 (stipulated in rows 2 and 3 being merged in column 1)
The following (4th) row is another header row where the second column is headed Unit 2 Area of Study 1 and the third column is headed Unit 2 Area of Study 2. Rows 5 and 6 represent the choice of political actors and the choice of inquiry issue for investigation, respectively. Links between and within units are then able to be represented by two kinds of arrows: blue shorter arrows which show quite specific connections between choices within units and across all four areas of study and longer orange arrows, which indicate connections between Units 1 and 2 on the basis of Australian /domestic politics or global politics. Links and connections provide opportuities for teachers to scaffold student learning.
