Select and apply materials, tools, equipment and processes to make a redeveloped product, and compare this with the original product.
Examples of learning activities
- Research and present information on the origins, sources and classification of at least two materials from within the same category (see pages 12 in the study design). For example, research conventional cotton and organic cotton; hoop pine and pinus radiata; copper and brass. Use Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint to share information with the class.
- Develop and present a materials test for a specific property such as strength, elasticity, or durability; photograph the testing procedures and make recommendations on the suitability of the materials for specific uses/applications. Use
Canva, PowerPoint or
Evernote to create a digital poster or article.
- Research how a furniture manufacturer chooses materials for its products. Explain which materials are considered ‘good’ choices and why.
- Trial construction/joining techniques and annotate their suitability and application/use for a specific product.
Develop a production schedule showing the stages of production, the tools, equipment and machines to be used and safety procedures to be followed. Include quality measures/checks and a production timeline.
- Complete a list of the materials and costs, and fixtures and fittings used.
- Choose at least two different pieces of equipment to be used during the production of a redeveloped product. Complete a written risk assessment that identifies the risk/hazard, assesses the level of risk and eliminates or controls the risk. Use a risk assessment application, such as
Risk Assessor Lite.
- Evaluate the finished product using the pre-determined four-part evaluation criterion. Compare the redeveloped product with the original one in relation to improvements in sustainability, appearance and function.

Development of a scheduled production plan
Demonstrate how to write a few steps of a scheduled production plan so that students may create their own. Students may refer to production plans or steps found in online tutorials/ websites, for example,
