AusVELS

AusVELS was the Foundation to Year 10 curriculum (2013-2016) for Victorian government and Catholic schools. AusVELS incorporated the Australian Curriculum F-10 for English, Mathematics, History and Science within the curriculum framework first developed for the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). AusVELS used an eleven level structure to reflect the design of the new Australian Curriculum while retaining Victorian priorities and approaches to teaching and learning.

In January 2017 it was replaced by the Victorian Curriculum F-10 as the mandated curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools.

Archived copies of the AusVELS curriculum are held by the National Library of Australia and are available at: http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/129125/20121206-0015/ausvels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/index.html

Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS)

Prior to the introduction of the AusVELS in 2013, the Victorian school curriculum was based the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The VELS was first published in 2005.

The Victorian essential learning Standards (VELS) outlined what was essential for all Victorian students to learn during their time at school from Prep to year 10. They provided a set of common state-wide standards which schools used to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents.

The VELS was based on best practice in Victorian schools and drew on national and international research about how students learn.

The VELS differed from traditional curricula by including knowledge and skills in the areas of physical, social and personal learning. Skills which are transferable across all areas of study such as thinking and communication were also included. The VELS curriculum encouraged a flexible and creative approach to learning.

The VELS has been archived and is available from the National Library of Australia website. http://nla.gov.au/nla.arc-129125

Curriculum and Standards Framework

Prior to the introduction of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards in 2006, the Victorian school curriculum was based on the Curriculum and Standards Framework (CSF). The CSF was first published in 1995. Updates were released during 2000 and 2001 which were known as the Curriculum and Standards Framework II.to do. CSF II was benchmarked nationally and internationally to ensure its standards were challenging and comparable with expectations in like countries.

CSF II was designed to clarify expectations; it created space in the early years for a focus on literacy and numeracy; embedded information and communication technology skills in all key learning areas; integrated civics and citizenship education and national literacy and numeracy benchmarks into the framework and made explicit the pathways from the compulsory years to further education and training.

The CSF II has been archived and is available from the National Library of Australia website: http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/99103/20090505-1614/csf.vcaa.vic.edu.au/home.html
