Cross-curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures is one of three cross-curriculum priorities embedded in the curriculum areas of the Victorian Curriculum F–10. As with the other cross-curriculum priorities, this cross-curriculum priority has been developed around key concepts and organising ideas, providing a scaffold for developing content knowledge, understanding and skills for the cross-curriculum priority and related curriculum areas.

Through learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the Victorian Curriculum F–10, students will develop knowledge and understanding of the beliefs, practices and connections to Country/Place of the oldest continuous cultures in the world. Students will understand that contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are strong, resilient, rich and diverse. They will appreciate the important historical and ongoing contributions made to Australia by its First Nations peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures have existed in Australia since time immemorial. Identities and cultures have been, and continue to be, a source of strength and resilience for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples against the historic and contemporary impacts of colonisation. This cross-curriculum priority will allow students to develop their understanding of these identities and cultures and the living communities in which they are expressed.

Students will develop and/or deepen their knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ law, languages, dialects and literacies, as well as arts, sciences, cosmologies, kinship, and community structures. They will learn how cultural knowledge and relationships are linked to the traditions and holistic world views of both Aboriginal communities and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Key concepts and organising ideas

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority has been developed around the three key concepts of Country/Place, Culture and People. These concepts and associated organising ideas reflect the essential knowledge, understandings and skills for the cross-curriculum priority.

Country/Place highlights and celebrates the unique belief systems that connect Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples physically and spiritually to Country/Place.

Organising ideas:

  • Australia has two distinct Indigenous groups (Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples) and within those groups there is significant diversity.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities maintain a special connection to and responsibility for Country/Place.
  • First Nations communities of Australia maintain a deep connection to, and responsibility for, Country/Place and have holistic belief systems that are connected to the land, sea, sky and waterways.

Culture examines the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through language, ways of life and experiences as expressed through historical, social and political lenses.

Organising ideas:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies have diverse and distinct languages and dialects, customs and beliefs. First Nations Australians have the right to maintain, control, protect and develop cultural expressions, as Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ways of life are uniquely expressed through ways of being, knowing, thinking and doing.
  • The First Peoples of Australia (Aboriginal peoples) belong to the world’s oldest continuous cultures. The First Nations Peoples of Australia (Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples) demonstrate resilience in the maintenance, practice and revitalisation of culture, despite the historic and enduring impacts of colonisation.

People addresses the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies. It examines kinship structures and the significant contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on a local, national and global scale.

Organising ideas:

  • The broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies encompass a diversity of nations across Australia.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have sophisticated political, economic, and social organisation systems, which include family and kinship structures, laws, traditions, customs, land tenure systems, and protocols for strong governance and authority.
  • The significant contributions of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the present and past are acknowledged locally, nationally, and globally.

Protocols

All teachers must follow the relevant protocols when teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. The protocols provide guidelines about how to protect the integrity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural expressions in a way in which all Victorian teachers and students can engage respectfully and feel connected to this identity. For advice, please refer to the Department of Education and Training’s Koorie Cross-Curricular Protocols.

The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (VAEAI) has produced Protocols for Koorie Education in Victorian Primary and Secondary Schools. These protocols include advice to assist schools to provide a welcoming environment for Aboriginal community members and how to work respectfully with the Koorie community to enrich teaching and learning programs.

It should be noted that increasingly the terms ‘First Nations Australians’ and ‘Australian First Nations’ are being favoured, in addition to Indigenous Australians, Aboriginal people(s) and Torres Strait Islander people(s).
