What is Respectful Relationships education? transcript

The Department of Education and Training have a range of evidence based resources available to support the teaching of respectful relationships education. These include:

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships are a suite of teaching and learning materials for Foundation to Level 10 that are mapped to the Victorian Curriculum. These have been developed to address the eight topics:

  • Topic 1: Emotional literacy
  • Topic 2: Personal strengths
  • Topic 3: Positive coping
  • Topic 4: Problem solving
  • Topic 5: Stress management
  • Topic 6: Help-seeking
  • Topic 7: Gender and identity (not included in Levels 9-10)
  • Topic 8: Positive gender relations (not included in Levels 9-10)

Note: Materials have also been included for years 11 and 12.

Building Respectful Relationships – stepping out against gender-based violence  is a resource designed for levels 7-8 and levels 9-10 and has three units.

  • Unit 1: Gender, respect and relationships (Level 7-8)
  • Unit 2: The Power Connection (Level 9-10)
  • Unit 3: Gender, power and media (Level 9-10)

Planning, implementation and assessment resources

The VCAA have developed a series of on-demand videos to support teachers and schools in the planning, implementation and assessment of Respectful Relationships in the Victorian Curriculum F–10.

Department of Education and Training

Building resilience in children and young people is a literature review providing a summary of current evidence to assist schools to inform approaches to building resilience and the development of personal and social capabilities.

Respectful relationships provides details about DETs respectful relationships initiative, including the evidence base for including respectful relationships education in schools, links to teaching and learning resources and information about a whole-school approach.

Respectful relationships education report is the outcome of the Violence Prevention, Intervention and Respectful Relationships Education in Victorian Secondary Schools Project, undertaken by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).

Our Watch

Our Watch is an organisation established to drive nationwide change in the culture, behaviours and power imbalances that lead to violence against women and their children. Their website contains a respectful relationships education toolkit and the evaluation report for Respectful Relationships Education in Schools.

Sexual Health Victoria

The Sexual Health Victoria website contains a Relationships and sexuality education portal which provides resources to support a whole-school approach to relationships and sexuality education. This includes teaching and learning materials for primary, secondary and special schools mapped to the Victorian Curriculum.
