Enterprising individuals and leadership
Outcome 1:
Identify and discuss enterprising behaviour in individuals and explain the relationship between enterprising behaviour and leadership.
Examples of learning activities
- Research and prepare a profile of an enterprising individual who has been or is a successful entrepreneur. Conduct research using the internet, interviews and networking to identify and describe the enterprising and leadership behaviour of the individual. Identify the qualities, skills and other factors that enabled this entrepreneur to become a success.
- Interview employees from several different work settings about the characteristics of good leadership. Identify examples of effective leadership from each work setting. Write a description of what constitutes effective leadership in the workplace.
- Research and prepare a profile of a business owner, manager or CEO. Describe their background and experience and how they rose to their current position. Identify their current leadership role and the organisation they currently work for. What skills, qualities and enterprising behaviours does this person possess? How did these assist him/her to become a successful leader?
- Prepare a presentation designed for a sporting club or community group about enterprising behaviours. Identify what enterprising behaviours are, examples of enterprising behaviours, why enterprising behaviours benefit an organisation and the strategies an organisation might use to develop enterprising behaviours in employees.

Identify and describe the employability skills involved in a series of scenarios relating to social and community activities, school and work.

Identify a set of leadership skills to be developed as part of a skills-development plan and use the Plan, Organise, Do and Review (PODR) process to support the development of these skills.
- Develop a flow chart depicting the link between enterprising behaviours and an enterprise culture.

Develop a digital leadership portfolio consisting of a series of tasks facilitating development of personal leadership skills.

Working in pairs, students read the scenarios in the Employability Skills Worksheet (docx - 67.08kb) document and then identify and describe the employability skills involved. Class discussion should follow.

Developing leadership skills
This activity aims to develop a planning process to use with developing, assessing and reporting on individual leadership skills. Working in pairs, students:
- Identify a set of leadership skills to be developed as part of a skills-development plan.
- Use the Plan, Organise, Do and Review (PODR) process to support the development of these skills.
- At the end of the PODR process, plan and prepare a class presentation on the development of leadership skills.
Class presentation
For the class presentation, students:
- Create an illustrated chart, mind map or digital technology presentation.
- Address all dot points under each stage of the PODR process below.
Plan, Organise, Do and Review
1. Plan
- Identify the goals to be achieved.
- List the leadership skills expected to be developed.
- Investigate and select suitable activities and processes to develop each skill.
- Outline overall timelines and resourcing issues.
2. Organise
- Identify the required actions (education, enterprise activities, supervision, practice, mentoring, training) to be undertaken in order to develop the identified skills.
- Identify and organise specific tasks and activities to enable development of these skills.
- Develop and submit a written skill development plan including appropriate timelines and resourcing requirements.
- Identify/select/develop ways to monitor and measure the development of these skills.
3. Do
- Implement the skills-development plan in the workplace.
- Record progress.
4. Review
- Collect any evaluations of work performance.
- Monitor the effect of personal participation.
- Identify any problems with people or systems.
- Compare the outcomes to the desired goals.
- Determine whether the plan was a success.
- Make any required changes.
Steps 2 and 3 may need to be revisited if problems arise.
Detailed example 3
A digital leadership portfolio
The purpose of this task is for students to demonstrate enterprising behaviour through reflection on and development of leadership skills. They complete the following steps:
- Create a digital leadership portfolio consisting of a series of tasks that focus on the development of personal leadership skills.
- Complete three portfolio tasks from the list below over the course of Unit 2.
Leadership portfolio tasks:
- In a small group, plan and run a team building activity for the rest of the class.
- Mentor a younger student to assist them with the development of leadership skills.
- Interview a person in the workplace in a leadership role.
- Research a prominent Australian leader.
- Participate in a leadership program.
Each task needs to be written up according to the instructions below.
Create a digital leadership portfolio:
- Outline the activity.
- Include photographs of the activity.
- Identify and describe each relevant leadership skill used or developed.
- Explain the relationship between leadership skills and work-related skills.
- Analyse the characteristics of enterprising leadership.
