Celebrating national collaboration in languages education
The Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages (CCAFL) is a unique initiative of the Australasian Curriculum, Assessment and Certification Authorities (ACACA).
Through this long-standing national partnership, jurisdictions across Australia work together to provide high-quality languages education at the senior secondary level.
The CCAFL Project supports students across the country in each state and the Northern Territory. The offering ensures access to a wide range of languages, prioritising those with smaller candidatures, through shared curriculum and assessment design.
Twenty-nine CCAFL languages are currently offered, hosted by:
- The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) – Auslan, Bengali, Bosnian, Chin Hakha, Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi, Karen, Macedonian, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Sinhala, Tamil, Turkish (17)
- New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) – Armenian, Croatian, Filipino, Serbian, Swedish, Chinese in Context, Japanese in Context, Korean in Context (8)
- South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) – Hungarian, Khmer, Polish, Nepali (4)
Established in 1988 as the National Assessment Framework for Languages at Senior Secondary Level, the project has evolved into a model of collaboration that continues to strengthen language learning opportunities across Australia.
Work is also underway to extend this framework to Auslan, with course implementation planned for 2026 (Year 11) and 2027 (Year 12).
The CCAFL Project remains a globally distinctive example of national collaboration, supporting diversity, inclusion, and excellence in languages education for all Australian students.
