" VET set me up for a career in nursing. "

Registered Nurse

Why I chose VET

I was always interested in healthcare. VET was a great opportunity for me to experience working in hospitals with a variety of healthcare professionals. It enabled me to keep going with my school studies, while getting a taste of the career I wanted.

What I got out of VET

VET provided me with invaluable industry experience; working in different clinical settings with a variety of healthcare professionals. Work placements gave me the opportunity to apply the skills I learnt in class. I was able to explore my personal strengths and learn to work with patients and colleagues.

My VET success story

After secondary school, I commenced a Bachelor of Nursing. I successfully applied for the Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship and Support Scheme so that I could relocate for my studies. My experience and commitment to a career in nursing was evident to the university and sponsors of the scholarship due to my achievements in VET.

The practical experience I gained in VET gave me a distinct advantage in my nursing studies. After my first year of studies, I was able to gain part-time employment in aged care.

After graduation, I was delighted to secure a graduate position at St Vincent's Hospital. I recently returned home to Shepparton to work in the emergency department at Goulburn Valley Health.

My advice

Don't be discouraged if you're not academically focused – VET will give you experience and develop your skills, giving you an advantage over others when finding work.
