Changes to Structured Workplace Learning for VET in 2024

Principals/directors and VCE VET teachers, administrators and students

Structured Workplace Learning Recognition (SWLR) arrangements are changing in 2024.

From the beginning of 2024, SWLR must be delivered as a VCE study design called Structured Workplace Learning Recognition for VET. There will be 2 units for the study design:

  • Unit 1: Learning in the workplace
  • Unit 2: Developing in the workplace.

What this means for students and schools

Schools will need to ensure their delivery arrangements are in line with the study design. A summary of the changes includes:

  • Students must undertake Unit 1 before commencing Unit 2.
  • Each unit involves at least 20 hours of scheduled classroom instruction.
  • Students undertaking a VCE VET program (classified as VE1) can complete one unit per year, with a maximum of 2 units in any VCE program, based on their reflections on different units of competency from the qualification that forms part of the VCE VET program.
  • Students undertaking an approved school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) (classified as VE2) can complete 2 units per year, with a maximum of 2 units in any VCE program, based on their reflections on different units of competency.
  • Students can obtain credit for satisfactory completion of each unit only once.
  • Students undertaking a VET program that is not on the VCE VET list of qualifications (classified as VE3) are ineligible to complete this VCE study with SWL.
  • As in previous years, students must complete 80 hours of SWL placement.
  • The award of satisfactory completion for a unit in SWL recognition for VET will be based on whether the student has demonstrated the set of outcomes specified for the unit within the study design.

In addition, SWLR General will not be available from 2024 and, therefore, no students can undertake SWLR units without a VCE VET (VE1) or SBAT (VE2). We are currently investigating for future years, other ways to recognise general workplace learning hours to support schools.
