Independent review of VCE examinations

Principals/directors and VCE teachers and students

In response to the VCAA 2023 examination issues, there will be an independent review of the VCAA’s VCE examination setting policies, processes and procedures.

The VCAA acknowledges that the errors during this year’s examination period made the experience for some students more difficult than it should have been, and we have apologised for the undue stress placed on them and their schools and families. These errors do not meet the VCAA’s high standards, which the community rightly expects.

The review will focus on the Mathematics and Chemistry examinations to look at the content and editorial process of Mathematics and Chemistry examinations, and the distribution of examinations where there are multiple papers for different levels of study within a subject area.

The Department of Education Secretary has appointed Dr John Bennett AM, former CEO of the NSW Education Standards Authority, to undertake the review.

Dr Bennett will be supported in his work by an external quality assurance expert from the Australian Council for Educational Research and an auditor from the Department of Education's internal auditor, Ernst and Young. The review will include consultation with external experts in Mathematics and Chemistry.

The review will report to the Secretary of the Department of the Education in March 2024.
