VCE Literature examination passages
Principals/directors, VCE coordinators and VCE Literature teachers
The VCE Literature examination requires students to respond to questions based on a set passage from a text on the VCE Literature Text List. To date, explicit language has been avoided in the examination.
From 2023, the VCE Literature examination may include passages with explicit language. Passages selected for both Sections A and B from texts prescribed for study (set editions) may be affected.
We acknowledge the importance of allowing VCE Literature students to explore the full text set for study and to demonstrate their understanding under examination conditions. While passages may now include explicit language, subject matter that may cause concern will continue to be avoided in the examination.
Students should be instructed to use quotation marks when referring to language from the passage or the broader text. This convention should also apply to any reference to or use of explicit language from the passage or the broader text.
