2023 VCE Literature examination – Berlin by Joanna Murray-Smith passages
The 2023 VCE Literature examination will include passages from both the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Joanna Murray-Smith play Berlin in both sections of the examination.
The 2023 VCE Literature Text List includes the 2021 edition of Berlin by Joanna Murray-Smith. In August 2022,
Berlin was revised and a 2022 edition of the play was published with nuanced revisions.
As both editions are in circulation, the VCAA will include passages from
both the 2021 and the 2022 editions of
Berlin in both sections of the examination. Students can select and respond to the passages from the edition they have studied.
The 2024 VCE Literature Text List was updated to reflect the changes in the text. From 2024, only the 2022 edition of
Berlin will be included on the VCE Literature examination.
VCE Literature examination answer book
From 2023, the VCE Literature examination will have a dedicated answer book, a sample of which is now available on the VCAA
Literature examination specifications and sample materials page. Please note that the structure of the answer book will mirror the examination task book, with the addition of extra space for responses at the end of the answer book.
The examination specifications have been revised to reflect the change from a general answer book to an answer book. The ‘advice’ section has also been revised. All support materials regarding assessment can be found in

Principals/Directors should:
- ensure VCE Literature teachers are aware that passages from both the 2021 and 2022 editions of
Berlin will be published in the 2023 VCE Literature examination
- ensure VCE Literature students are aware that passages from both the 2021 and 2022 editions of
Berlin will be published in the 2023 VCE Literature examination and they know which edition they have been studying
