The opportunity to learn an Aboriginal language in schools in Victoria is supported by the
Victorian Aboriginal Languages (VAL) F–10 curriculum, which utilises a revival language curriculum. School language programs can be initiated by schools or Aboriginal community members.
Traditional Owners need to grant permission before a Victorian Aboriginal language can be taught in a school program..
A successful Aboriginal language program enriches schools and their communities by connecting students to local history, culture, Country and Aboriginal ways of knowing, doing and being. Implementing a Victorian Aboriginal language program takes a strong commitment from the local Aboriginal community and the school. It requires discussion, consultation, time, long-term commitment and hard work.
The following steps are suggested as a guide for schools wishing to implement a VAL program using the
VAL F–10 curriculum.
