Annotated work samples

Annotated student work samples to support curriculum implementation in specialist schools

These annotated student work samples were produced as part of a moderation project in partnership with a Victorian specialist school and a special education consultant.

The work samples were moderated using Levels A–D: Towards Foundation of the Victorian Curriculum F–10. Levels A–D: Towards Foundation caters for those students with disabilities and additional learning needs whose learning is well below the curriculum’s Foundation Level standards. It has been designed for students who have a significant intellectual disability. The curriculum at these levels provides this cohort of students with access to curriculum content and standards that enable them to move towards the learning described at Foundation Level.

Each set of student work samples comprises work created by students with disabilities and additional learning needs, with annotations on highlights, gaps and opportunities, plus some discussion of the moderation process. One set of work samples features work assessed at Levels C and D (Towards Foundation) of the English curriculum; the other features work assessed at Foundation and Level 1 of the curriculum.

Specialist schools may use these resources as part of professional discussions to support teachers to deepen their understanding of Levels A–D, including what achievement looks like at Levels A–D, and how their students may move from Levels A–D to the F–10 curriculum.

The annotated student work samples provide teachers with examples of student learning achievements in the three modes of Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking and Listening.

These work samples support teachers to:

  • understand the Victorian Curriculum Foundation-10 English curriculum achievement standards
  • develop targeted teaching and learning plans
  • make consistent and balanced judgements about student achievement.

They feature annotated videos of students reading and discussing texts. The writing work samples also feature annotated images of written work. At the end of the annotations, advice is provided to support the planning of the next stage of student learning.

Schools can use these work samples as part of professional discussions to support teachers to deepen their understanding of the levels of achievement articulated in the curriculum.

Please note: These work samples are representative of typical tasks and activities in which students regularly participate, rather than exemplars. They are not a collection or a set sequence of work, nor is there a pre-determined number of tasks at each level. Each sample may vary in terms of how much student time was involved in undertaking the task or the degree of support provided by the teacher. As a consequence each work sample may include errors, spelling mistakes and individual student opinions.
