Revised Character List

Updated VCE Character List for Chinese Second Language/Second Language Advanced

  1. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority has updated the character list for the VCE Chinese Second Language/Second Language Advanced study design.
  2. The revised character list for these two studies will be implemented for Units 1 to 4 in 2011. The updated character list is attached to this notice and will be available in January 2011 on the relevant Chinese study page at: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au
  3. The modifications that have been made are as follows:
    1. Sixty seven characters have been removed from the old character list and replaced with new characters.
    2. The total number of characters remains the same at 420 characters.  
    3. Numbers have been separated out to be listed under the heading Special Terms and a section titled Family Members and Kinship has been added.
    4. Two surnames have been added to the Surnames section and three names have been added to the Famous People section.
    5. Five names of places have been removed and one new place name has been added.
    6. Three names of festivals have been added and one has been removed.
  4. It is expected that students of both Chinese Second Language and Chinese Second Language Advanced will be able to understand the items on the character list as well as a wider range of vocabulary relevant to the themes and topics prescribed in the study design.
  5. As is the current practice, all questions, tasks and texts provided in Chinese in the written examination will be written in both complex and simplified characters.
