Overview

Arabic is spoken by approximately 280 million people in 22 countries over several continents. It is the official language of the Arab world, which includes countries of the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region, and is one of the official languages of the United Nations. The Arabic-speaking world has a long history, and the Arabic language has evolved and flourished over time, as evidenced by the richness of its literature. Arabic comprises a number of dialects that reflect the cultural diversity of Arabic-speaking countries, regions and communities. Please refer to Learning in Arabic for further information.

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 Arabic curriculum has two interrelated strands, Communicating and Understanding, which are further divided into sub-strands. The Arabic curriculum recognises that there are different entry points into language learning, which reflects current language teaching practice. There are two possible learning sequences:

  • F–10 sequence for students who begin to learn the language in primary school and continue to Year 10.
  • 7–10 sequence for students who begin to learn the language in Year 7.

The Languages curriculum can be viewed via the Victorian Curriculum F–10 website

Please refer to the general frequently asked questions for Languages.
